“Helpful Tips” - Fall Home Maintenance Checklist Fall is here and it is time to get your home in shape for the colder months ahead. Here’s a checklist to keep your home in peak condition this winter. EXTERIOR □ Check the foundation for cracks □ Repair peeling or blistering paint □ Inspect the roof for missing or loose shingles □ Repair and seal driveway □ Clean all gutters and downspouts of leaves & debris □ Caulk windows and weatherstrip doors □ Install or inspect storm windows and doors & screens INTERIOR □ Have heating system checked – change filters if needed □ Change batteries in smoke and CO detectors, check fire extinguishers □ Clean out the fireplace and have flue & chimney inspected □ Check all windows for drafts, loose frames, or cracked panes □ Vacuum air intakes and ducts in home □ Remove window air conditioners □ Dust blinds & curtains through the house YARD & LANDSCAPING □ Plant spring flowering bulbs □ Drain fuel from gas operated lawn equipment □ Clean and store summer garden tools □ Drain hoses and shut off outside water valves as temperatures drop □ Fertilize the lawn □ Prune trees and shrubs after the leaves turn, to encourage growth. □ Trim trees away from power lines and home. Heavy snow/ice can cause damage in winter □ Prepare and service snow removal equipment PORCH & DECK □ Check porch and deck supports, stairs and railings □ Clean & apply sealer to decks □ Cover & store outdoor furniture, barbeques and other items □ Empty standing water or loose soil/dirt from flower pots/containers EMERGENCY & CAR CARE □ Establish a 3 day stock of emergency provisions. Allocate a space; keep everything you need in case of a power outage. Go over plan with family □ Know how to locate & turn off water shut-off valve in case pipes do freeze □ Check your car and make sure that it’s been serviced and small problems are taken care of. Check your tire tread and pressure, the battery and all fluid levels. Replace windshield wipers if needed. Create a cold weather/emergency kit and keep it in the trunk along with chains and flares. Include water, high energy snacks, blanket(s), flashlight with spare batters, first aid kit and jumper cables. |
